The Green Light
The green light has many ways to interpret the symbolism in the book. First of all it's Gatsby's wish to have Daisy, but the green light means much more. Gatsby searched his whole life for something better. Money, success, acceptance, and Daisy, but he never feels satisfied. Even when he has the parties in his large house and got all the attention of the people, he just cares for Daisy. In his dreams Gatsby created a future for her and him. So the green light stands for all of Gatsby's wishes. And when Nick talks about the green light at the end of the book he says "It eluded us then, but that's no matter- tomorrow we will run faster, stretch our arms out farther...." . He connects the green light to all people. Everyone has dreams and wishes but sometimes they are far away. Gatsby can see the light but between him and the light is the lake which show the distance and the aspect that he can't reach it. All in all the green light stands for hope and wishes.
The eyes of T.J. Eckleburg
They symbolize the "Eyes of God". The author uses the word "careless" a lot in his book by describing people and their behavior during diffrent events. The eyes are always mentioned when Nick is in the near of Wilson's garage because there is the place were the most unmoral and selfish scenes take place: Myrtle's death or Tom's affair. The charakters don't fear consequences or judgment. The Eyes look over the situation, objectively, but offer a kind of judgment on the characters and their actions. All of these crimes go unpunished. So they eyes look on and remind the characters of the guilt that they forget to have for what they have done.
East and West Egg
One of the most important aspect in the novel is the splitted society. East and West Egg acts as a special symbol. Tom and Daisy live on the East Egg side which is more educated and more polite. Nick and Gatsby live on the West. It stands for people who don't have a real standing, even if they have money, people keep saying that Gatsby is "new rich". Gatsby stares always to the green light, which is on the East. It stands for Daisy, the woman Gatsby always wanted but never gets. East and West Egg is splitted by the lake which created a kind of barrier. The barrier keeps the people apart form one antoher and from what they want.
